Kitchen Staples for Holiday Months

Mid-November is when things start to get crazy for folks. There’s lots of traveling, lots of cooking, lots of busy nights, and lots of panicky moment when you don’t feel prepared for a meal. All of a sudden dinners and breakfast just sneak up on people, and eating out, on the go or skipping meals altogether becomes the go-to. If you start now – you can stock your kitchen well to handle these moments, and keep things on hand that can work for quick meals and meal prep if you’re in a pinch. Here are some of my favorite healthy ingredients and products to keep on hand and keep you on track with your nutrition plan through the end of the year:

Whole grains: Quinoa, brown rice, barley, cous cous, oats

Proteins: Black beans, garbanzo beans, cashews, walnuts, white beans, hemp seeds

  • Beans (either dried or canned) make high protein additions to quick soups and stews and nuts/seeds are an excellent protein source for snacking, adding to hot cereals or salads.

Vegetables: Broccoli, beets, carrots, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, turnips, kale

  • Keep at least 2-3 fresh veggies on hand to chop, steam and add to meals. Squashes have a long shelf life and keep for weeks.

Quick Meals: Pacific soups, Kitchari, organic pasta

Fridge & Freezer: Evol frozen organic meals, high protein yogurts, hummus (high protein snacking), seasonal fruits for snacking (apples, pears, oranges), frozen veggies to quickly steam (peas, beans, corn, broccoli, mixed veggies)

Local Options for Healthy meals:

  1. Daily Jars
  2. Ellwood Thompson’s hot bar
  3. Relay Foods

My best suggestion: Make a meal plan for the upcoming week, or batch cook at least 1-2 meals on a weekend to keep on hand for busy nights, even if they’re unexpectedly busy nights. Having a meal plan means you also stock your pantry beforehand to have ingredients on hand. If you keep a few of these staples in your kitchen, you’ll likely have the basics covered. All of the above ingredients and products are available at Ellwood Thompsons local market.
