Food Banks or Fine Dining? with Shalom Farms

Balancing access, affordability, and authenticity to build a better food system.

Ellwood’s Community Classroom

Shalom Farm’s Lead Team |  Dominic Barrett, Steve Miles & Claire Hitchins

Can and should food banks distribute the same food as Ellwood’s? Is a conventional tomato better than no tomato at all? Must we choose between providing good food to some or lesser quality food to all? The US spends less on groceries than any other country, while many Americans still lack access to good food. Meanwhile,  local farmers often struggle to make a living growing food in a way they feel good about.

In this 4th installment of our Farmer Speaker Series, the lead staff of Shalom Farms  explore the practical and ethical challenges  of working to make sure every Richmonder can access, choose, and use good food – food that’s good for our bodies, good for our environment and good for our communities.
