Ellwood’s Community Classroom

John Ennis & Ruth Brown, Greater Richmond Area Council for Authentic Jazz Dance Education (JDEC)

John Ennis has been dancing since 2002 and dancing Lindy Hop since 2005. His defining characteristic is enthusiasm – he is completely convinced (and with good reason) that Lindy Hop is the culmination of human achievement. This enthusiasm is evident not only in John’s dancing, but also in his dedication to increasing his dance knowledge, to communicating that knowledge to others in the community, and to helping grow a vibrant Lindy Hop scene here in Richmond, Virginia.

Ruth Brown’s first experience with modern Lindy Hop was on her first date with John Ennis in 2010, and she’s been rapidly expanding her knowledge ever since! A true lover of Lindy Hop, Ruth is known for her eagerness to push her dancing forward, doing her best to learn as much as possible on both the social floor and in workshop environments. Among her students, Ruth is known for her kindness and her attention for detail.

So exactly what is Lindy Hop you ask? Think old-timey swing dancing. Get moving and get introduced to Lindy Hop and the world of Jazz dance!  Two, 1-hour classes are offered each Monday. No partner or dance experience needed, just comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing and shoes.

The first class, taking place from 6:30 to 7:30PM, will be an intermediate level month-long series on a specific style of Lindy Hop. The class theme will rotate monthly, so there’s always something new to learn. The full list of classes offered by JDEC in the Richmond area is maintained here.

The second class, running from 7:30 to 8:30PM, will also be a month-long series on a specific style of Lindy Hop at a more beginner level. The class is a great introduction to this old-timey, lively, swing dancing! You’ll progress from having no prior knowledge of Lindy Hop to the basic skill needed to enjoy social dancing at moderate tempos of swing music.  In particular, we’ll build a strong foundation on which to continue your growth as a Lindy Hopper into the future.

No partner or dance experience needed, just comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing and shoes.  But the most important thing to bring is a willingness to let go, try something new, and have fun!
