Will The Food Safety Bill Make Food Safe?

With a vote likely imminent on the Food Safety Bill S510 this week, many of us want to call our Senators and weigh in on the impending vote, which will affect food quality, safety and price for years to come.

But we aren’t sure exactly how to weigh in because confusion about this bill is so rampant. Most agree that something needs to be done about industrial suppliers whose unhealthy livestock farming practices led to the recent salmonella outbreak and recall of eggs. But the question is what? Charlottesville's Harvest Festival 2010

This year’s Harvest Festival at the Monticello was an educational experience. Located at the historic and beautiful Jeffersonian homestead, festival goers enjoyed everything from fermentation workshops to medicinal plant walks. Naturalists lectured on the local floral. Seed savers answered growers questions. Beekeepers displayed their queens. Ira Wallace, force of nature that she is, was a catalyst behind this year’s event. Thanks to  her energy and all the hard workers at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, and all the vendors and educators that made it possible, the Festival was a Harvest Celebration to make Virginia proud.   Continue reading
